What exactly is a Gravatar?

[dropcap]Y[/dropcap]ou may or may not have heard others talking about a Gravatar. Well what the heck is it? – You may be asking. Well if that is you then I have a bit of an explanation for you.

A Gravatar is a globally recognised avatar that is associated with your email address. It allows you to choose a photograph or a picture and store it in the Gravatar database. The really great thing about this is that it really is universal and if you comment on things like blogs your comment with have your Gravatar automatically appear.

So what is so great about that you may be wondering?
Well being easily identified on blog comments and forum posts definitely helps you to be more credible and will improve your chances of getting a response.

The nice thing about WordPress is that it has support for Gravatars by default and most WordPress themes include them. As an example look at the bottom of this post where I have commented. You will see my Gravatar in action 😉

[button type=”flat” shape=”square” size=”mini” href=”http://www.gravatar.com” title=”Click here to get your Gravatar – It is 100% free”]Click here to get your Gravatar – It is 100% free[/button]

For those of you that already have a Gravatar…
Have you found any other cool use of it?

Well this is an example of a comment showing the use of my Gravatar. As you can see it look good and you can easily see who I am. Having a blank box or default icon is way less personal.
