WordPress Ping list » What is it?
[dropcap]H[/dropcap]ave you heard of a WordPress ping list? Well don’t feel bad if you haven’t. A while back I had no clue what this was, where to use it and what the benefits are. As with all things there are debates that float across the Internet as to which is the best ping list to use or if ping lists are even a good idea. In my opinion it is worthwhile to use a ping list and I will explain why.
We take a lot of time to set up a new professional looking blog. We try our best to produce fresh and relevant content for our users to engage in. We even try to promote our blog posts via social media and social bookmarking services. But if we don’t get any readers it kind of feels like we are wasting our time and often we lose heart. This is where I find a ping list to be helpful.
A ping list is a list of different urls that each link to a specific service. This service is primarily concerned with wanting to know when a new blog post has been updated. So the beauty of having a ping list setup in your WordPress admin is having a notification of your new blog post pushed through to several websites that are actively crawled by search engine spiders. This of course helps your site to start climbing the rankings. Also if users are subscribed to these ‘ping’ services some may even get direct notification or your blog post if it relates to their area of interest.
So how do you implement a ping list then?
This is actually the easy part. All you need to do in your WordPress admin is access the ‘Settings’ Panel. Once there, click on the ‘Writing’ Settings option. When the page has loaded scroll down to the bottom and you will find the ‘Update Services’ section. Simply copy the list I have included below and paste it into the text area provided. Click on ‘Save Changes’ and you are done. It’s as easy as that.
